I've checked out this tripod at our local camera shop once before and I almost bought it along with a bogen ball-head. I needed something that was compact and light-weight yet sturdy enough to hold a Canon 30D and 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM lens and it does this very well, so I feel that this is a good tripod for long hikes into the wilderness.
