I remember back just 3 years ago when the XT and XTi were out and I have to say, I don't recall seeing those kits at these price-points.
Really not a bad deal if you want to get started into DLSR photography. I suppose the reason this kit considerably cheaper than most retailers is that it features the Tamron 28-80mm non-IS lens as apposed to the 18-55mm IS lens. $499 is not bad:
