Very nice Phil...there are many ways to do this and you got me to wanting to share my method which incorporates many of the things you used, just a few other differences.  Depending on the selection area once the area is selected in my case I like to select/modify/feather 1-3px.  I also use and adjustment layer on the selection to desaturated and lighten/darken.  Which app did you use to record, Camtasia?  If Camtasia I really want to find out how to turn on the key(s) used prompt...pretty cool.
