I made one for my Canon 40D and 420EX Speedlight.  Since the size of the camera and flash were different, I mocked out the shape of the steel bracket with a metal shirt hanger first to know where to make all the bends.

I ended up having to use 2 extra layers of cutting mat and a layer of wax paper on the bottom half to even out the light output with the top half of the reflector.

More "build" photos and an example shot can be found here on my blog if you care to look.

Great set of progress images. I'm doing pretty much the same exact build(40D with grip)as you except I have the 580EX II. I'm at the point where all I need to do is bend the bar. I was wondering if you could give me the measurements you made with the bends. It would be a huge help and I'd appreciate it very much. Thanks, Brian

Hey guys.  Sorry I haven't been around much.  Things have been pretty busy around here.

@BCR686, I responded to your post on my Facebook fan page.  I'll post my response here too just in case.  See below.

That's awesome you're making a setup as well! As for the bends, to be honest, I didn't make any measurements. I actually took a wire coat hanger and bent it to fit the way the metal bar would need bent. Then I used the bent coat hanger as a mock-up and made the same bends on the metal bar.

To me, it was easier to get a better idea on where the bends needed to be by using this method. I hope this helps you out and good luck! Let me know how it turns out.

Yeah I got your reply on Facebook. Thanks man.

Well I finally finished mine, not without any hiccups though.

This is pretty awesome! Just built mine for a D700, SB800 and put my 28-70 on it; over 3" in diameter!

Hey now I'm jealous...I like that design...what did you use for the shade and the inner vent reducer...looks like the shade is larger (better) but not sure if it's the same 5-4" vent reducer.

Smiley Well, for shade I used IKEA tureen http://www.ikea.com/ru/ru/catalog/products/30081467 , it's 28cm(11") in diameter, as for vent reducer that's not vent reducer Smiley, it's just IKEA tin (3.3") http://www.ikea.com/ru/ru/catalog/products/20083650.
The only one disadvantage of that design is weight (1 kg without camera, flash and flash trigger). What's weight of your device?

Hey forgot to mention...that test shot has great light too.  Thanks for posting the links...yes it would be heavier as my shade is made from light-weight (thin) aluminum.  For USA people:  http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30081467  and http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20083650  (poul-hip, is this correct?).

I will weigh mine tonight and let you know.
