Hi Roy!  Long time no talk.  Guess what, I was googling my name and I came up with a hit to the photoforum.com.  I saw pictures from diving electric beach many years ago.  Pretty cool!  Brought back some memories.

Anyway, just wanted to stop in and say hi.  Ohh, as luck may have it, about 2 years ago I took up photography as a hobby too.  I'm still learning and what not--I don't think my work can compare to what I've seen of yours.  But I'm getting there.  I started with the Canon Rebel XT but recently got the Canon 40D.  My wife is now using the rebel.  Lucky for me, she fell in love with photography too.  Anyway, if your interested you can see our pictures at www.pbase.com/mdecaprio.  I know I have pictures on there that should be taken down, I just get excited sharing photos...LOL

Anyway, if you didn't know, we are back living in Hawaii.  Wanna do some diving?

Talk to you soon!  Aloha, Mike

Good to hear from you Mike...you live in a great place to take photos!  I tried looking up your email but didn't have any luck so I'm glad you found my site.  Yep, that's you holding that pillow star...is this the forum post you found?

You have a nice gallery over on pbase!  I want to get more into landscape.  Have your heard of neutral density (ND) filters for landscape?  I really like this guy's flickr gallery:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/patrick-smith-photography/

BTW, here's my flickr stream if you haven't found it yet:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/motleypixel/

Keep in touch!

Yep, that is the formum.

Yep, being back in Hawaii is great.  A totally different experience than the Navy days.  It is expensive, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I saw your flickr.  Very cool.  My wife has a flickr account (can't remember name).  I've been having fun with pbase.  I kinda wish I started with flickr because so many people use it and it is kind of fun.  But, I'm sticking with pbase for now.  I joined this other site too.  It is call DP Challenge www.dpchallenge.com.  They have weekly competitions.  I'm hoping to use it to develop my creative side.

As for ND.  I've read up on ND filters.  I know I need them.  I'm planning on putting an order together for some.  I usually by good UV and CP filters.  With ND, I'm under the impression I would be best off with square graduated filters.  I'm just not sure what are the best ones.  Other than that I have the rebel XT and the 18-55 (hardly use) that came with it, the 40D, 70-200L f4, 100mm Macro f2.8, 50mm f1.8, 17-55mm f2.8 (ef-s).  I also have the EX-480 flash.  I know it is not the 580 but good enough for me.

Anyway, talk to you soon!  Aloha

Mike,

I've read the Cokin filter bracket system and ND grads are really the most flexible.  It's good to hear from you.  You have a nice camera and good set of lenses.  It's so funny, I have the exact same line-up of lenses as you, nothing more or less...I have the 30D and a 580ex and 430ex...I never knew there was a 480.

Any way, curious, do you remember this photo:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/motleypixel/2753928764/in/set-72157606701008150/  we did a boat dive?

That is funny that we have the same set up.  I have the 430EX flash.  I always think it is a 480 when I'm not looking at it.  For some reason I always remember 430 as 480.

My wife doesn't know it but last night I ordered her the lensbabies 3G.  Her birthday is coming up and she always comments that the lensbabies look like fun.  So, I just bought it.

Anyway, of course I remember that picture.  As I recall, when we were looking at the pictures following development at the NEX photo store, some lady saw it and gave you $20 for the picture right than and there.

So, how long you been shooting?  I don't know if you heard but the volcano started erupting from a different vent a number of months back.  Supposedly there is a really good lookout to see the lava flowing.  I am trying to find a weekend to get over there and shoot some volcano stuff.  I really love the entire volcano park.  So much fun.  last year I spent 6 days on the big island and even stayed a night at the volcano house.  so cool.  volcano house is the oldest continuing running hotel in the US.

I'll be sure to keep checking this site and these boards.  Really nice site you got going on here!  -Aloha
