Update...since this little shoot out, I've sold everything but the Minolta MD Rokkor-X 58/1.4 and I've also acquired a Minolta MD Rokkor-X 50/1.4 and Rokkor-X 45/2 and I have to say the MD 50/1.4 kills them all!  Well actually the 58/1.4 is very close to the 50/1.4 and the 45/2 is very nice too.

Here's all my shots with the Minolta MC Rokkor-PF 58mm f/1.4:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/motleypixel/tags/minoltamcrokkorpf58mm14/

All shots with the Minolta MD Rokkor-X 50mm f/1.4:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/motleypixel/tags/minoltamdrokkorx50mmf14/

All shot with the Minolta MD RokkorX 45mm f/2:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/motleypixel/tags/minoltamdrokkorx45mmf2/

You'll notice I use the 45/2 the most and there's a good reason, it's light/compact, good focal length for a FF body and it's not bad as far as IQ.

Hello!
Motley, first of all, thank you for such informative video. One thing, you were concerned about in the video, was shaving off the rear barrel of the lens block - to avoid unnecessary protrusion that could cause mirror collision on cameras such as Canon 5d. Have you managed to do this already?

Thanks in advance.
Alex.

If you are trying to decide whether to use Lightroom, this Introduction video from my Lightroom course explains several advantages of LR for photographers, how it differs from Photoshop, and why you might want to use it. I hope you find this helpful in making your decision.

This appears to be a great forum. Thank you for allowing me to be part of it.

Photography has always been an interest of mine; however, I am not good at it. My real interest is in wildlife photography. The telephoto can really bring out the beauty of so many creatures. And the eyes of those creatures can tell quite the story.

Name:  Bill Tolbert

Live:  Georgetown. TX

Photograph Locations:  Unfortunately, I don’t use the camera much around Austin. I guess I should take more time with it around town.

Photographer type:  Mostly wildlife, but I am becoming interested in landscape as well.

Are you pro or make your primary income from photography:  Absolutely not!!

Favorite location (local or abroad):  A few years ago I was able to tour the Galapagos Islands. The weather was simply beautiful. Because there are no real predators on the Islands for the wildlife, they are very easy to photograph. A wonderful place to enjoy natural habitat of the island creatures.

Well,

I'm not very keen at removing the cop cover assembly for now, I'll leave it like this and see how it goes.

The more I dig into it, the more I see what kind of damage it had suffered. It clearly fell on something quite hard, from a good height.
The top cover assembly has a crack near the flash from front to back diagonally. It's still in 1 piece, but I don't really want to know if it's just "holding there".
I'm lucky nothing else got broken... and for the price I paid ($50!), I can't argue!

I've seen full top cover replacement part on ebay for ~$80-$90, I'll see if I really miss the flash or if it start to create more problem.
If I can get an hold of another broken 50D for less (electronic problem maybe?) I could merge both working parts.

One a side note, the 50D doesn't seem to have that mechanical mirror thing you fixed on your 40D.

It should survive for a while considering the shutter count is ~9500!

The camera is still working fine for now. But I'm back to the repair desk...

I found a new problem, the popup flash doesn't popup.
There's a micro motor trying to get it opened, but it fail.
I got the front bezel removed and I think there might be a missing gear.
I can pop the flash using a screwdriver and it work fine when opened.

It's not a major issue as I got a Yongnuo external flash and I rarely use the popup flash, but I'd like to have all the bits of this camera working Tongue
