Although this may come across slightly condescending my main 'tip' isn't a secret in any way, but for the purpose of the exercise make sure you use layers(!).
I see a lot of people buying software like Photoshop and trying to process images with a single layer so often! The time spent and the unspectacular results make you wonder why people bother at all!

Sounds good Link. Layers are a key aspect to PS for sure.

I've seen the manipulation achieved with using layers and it's a work in progress for me being a relative new user to Photoshop. Question, with version CS2, I've notice that there's a limited group of adjustments available in an adjustment layer. Can I assume your suggesting that the workflow is with layers first with other adjustments(e.g. image and filter) to follow?

Welcome Levi, I'll try to post a very simple tutorial very soon. Basically my photoshop knowledge is all self taught and from reading other tutorials. I went basics, to going way overboard, to honing my skill to be more efficient. I really don't do much, but if you have the right tools/filters it makes a huge difference.
Stay tuned and in the mean-time please introduce yourself in the "Introductions" thread.
