I ran across some great reviews on www.16-9.net on the Nikkor 14-24mm 2.8. This may be one of the best lenses ever made, and is most certainly the best zoom ever made. Check the reviews out:

Nikon 14-24mm v Canon 24mm L v Sigma 12-24mm

Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 G v Canon 16-35mm f2.8 L II v Contax Vario Sonnar 17-35mm f2.8
 
Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 G v Canon 14mm L II Tested on Canon 1Ds III

Really worth the time to take a look at. I'm thinking of cross posting in the Canon forum as well since these tests were done on a Canon body.

Wow, if I had the money this lens would be my preferred landscape lens on a FF canon body.

Boy oh boy, that last link blow me away with the samples and how much better the Nikon lens is over the L Canon lens.

Interesting comparison - looks like Canon has some work to do on that lens to make it comparable.

The only lens they tested that beat it was the 21mm Zeiss Distagon - a $1500 Prime German lens. Wow.

Fixed the links in the OP Mike.  That's a crazy good lens...you need to seriously mate your D700 with it...serious man...get more real estate gigs and pull off some awesome stuff and pay for it that way.

btw - there was one more link I didn't post. In this review the Nikon does meet its match:

However, the lens that beats it is a $1500 Zeiss 21mm Distagon. It's almost as expensive, is manual focus, and is a prime lens. It's amazing that this zoom is out resolving L series prime lens glass from Canon.
